iPad to hold on to 67% of tablet field in 2011

iPadCaris says iPad to hold two thirds of tablets

A new analyst note from Caris & Co. analyst Robert Cihra has forecast that Apple will hold on to its majority market share of tablets in 2011. He expected the iPad to keep 67 percent of the market owing both to the rapid early adoption but also to lag time for rivals, who were sent “back to the drawing board.” Like with an iSuppli estimate, Cihra saw the delay giving Apple a head start, even as the tablet market tripled in size to 54 million next year, 36 million of which would be iPads.
Most Android tablet designers are likely waiting until a few months in before releasing their devices, as Google hasn’t necessarily finished Honeycomb, or Android 2.4, and thus doesn’t have a fully optimized tablet OS. With the exception of the Samsung Galaxy Tab, most pre-Honeycomb tablets have been relegated to niche status or faced teething problems from a lack of optimization. Windows tablets are still a minority and weren’t considered a significant factor.

Apple Sued for Violating Double Click Patent

The Mac ObserverApple has been named in a new lawsuit that accuses several companies of violating a patent that covers the idea of double clicking a user interface element and then interacting with a new user interface element caused by the double clicking. Apple’s iPad and iPhone are named in the suit as offending devices, and also targeted are Adobe, HTC, LG, Mobilcomm, Motorola, Nokia, Opera, Palm, Quickoffice, and Samsung.

Titled, “Double-Clicking a Point-and-Click User Interface Apparatus to Enable a New Interaction with Content represented by an Active Visual Display Element,” the patent was filed in 2002 by Actify, granted in 2007, and is now owned by Hopewell Culture and Design. That’s not a typo: In 2007, a patent was granted for the idea of double clicking, which was filed in 2002, 18 years after the Macintosh that popularized the idea of clicking and double clicking to market was first introduced.

“The Intel SSD 310 series will allow us to provide the advantages of a full-performance Intel SSD paired with the storage of a hard disk drive in a small, dual-drive system,” Lenovo’s ThinkPad honcho Tom Butler said in a prepared statement.

A dual-drive system will allow users to put their system and apps on the SDD for fast boot and launch times, while storing their files and data on relatively pokey, inexpensive 2.5-inch hard drives.

Camera + Sales Xmas 2010Camera+ reached an impressive 78,995 downloads on Christmas Day alone, which represents $54,743 for the developer after Apple’s 30% cut.

While the sales graph seems to suggest that the sales have returned to pre-Christmas levels, the graph is somewhat misleading, as Camera+ had been ranked as high as #2 in Top Paid Apps before Christmas but today holds a rank of #13.

Therefore, it seems that there has been a sustained boost in overall App Store sales since Christmas Day.
